Riots Poem – Title suggestions welcome. . .

15 Feb

Fold out table, top floor Hackney flat,
Mary’s London sheep radio bleats
Bemusement, misled students,
Disregard for safer streets.
Millbank protest, controlled crime,
But treason’s easy
To forget with time
When photo-cards in top pockets
Buy discounts at Topshop and McDonalds.

Box TV, low resolution Sony pixels blur between
Distracted X-Factor happy endings,
Government announces, people cut your spendings,
Biblical top bronze preach love to neighbours,
David Cameron, your saviour,
While terracotta Tuscan tiles reflect
The heat of missiles thrown or bought abroad.

CO19 left Duggan dead,
On August 4th.
Had he ever been washed clean
With social opportunity?
Did he taste the difference at Sainsbury’s?

Actions speak louder than clever rhetoric,
And like Robin Hood’s nemesis,
Margaret Thatcher was selling shipment
Crates of shit with tales of class divisions that
Don’t exist.
No society, Big Society, big switch.

But this isn’t just a stab at the blue,
Because it’s like two fruitless swindles
Rooted in the same soil.
The reds would have backed the bankers too.

So playing on roundabouts back at Broadwater Farm,
History excuses criminal harm and raiding Curry’s or Comet
For HD pixels left unbroken, because the hoods and masks are
Kept or chose to be unspoken,
So disenfranchised flames are lit in Tottenham stores,
Where only effigies were burned the year before,
Because actions shout louder in deaf leader’s ears than
Social network tabloid smears.

Middle-class, middle voice, uni vacuum world of choice,
Can only speculate
But you know what, there’s never no reason for hate,
And August’s embers have not been stamped away by
Police-issue boots, they’ll brew like tea in people taken for
Keep Calm and Carry On mugs, while Canary Wharf veterans
Continue to laugh, knowing that brown sneezing noses
Who promise hoodies not futures but hugs
Will reimburse gambled loot,
Because even with fast-tracked unjust juries,
It’s hard to be a criminal while you’re wearing a suit.

Titles? My mind is brainstorming… Loyalty cards, collecting stamps to redeem for ?? yourself? Loyalty, redemption… one for all and all for one,
how about: None for All and All for None.
I’m so glad Mrs T got a mention – I don’t have a political bone in my body (tee hee hee)- but I think the lady deserves a little credit for what comes after!

Aye, she did leave something of a legacy to the working classes.
I quite like None for All and All for None. I also like the idea of calling it Collecting Stamps. Hmm. . .

Hmm indeed, titles are tricky, I always think they should add something if at all possible.
