SS8 Scratch idea – Simone E

12 Jan

Sorry its late 😦 But in brief an idea of a young girl who travels every day to a coffee shop after school, she orders chocolate and marshmallows as per usual, she beings to characterize it and describe her mothers features/characters through her favourite drink, it then becomes clear she is grieving for the loss of her mother.

Hi Simone – no stress, it is up and your name is down for the scratch. I tagged you in the doc on FB that has all the other deadlines in. Get these in your diary!

Very interesting idea…have you read any poetry that use a extended image in this way? Some poems this idea made me think of…
-Machicko Dead by Jack Gilbert – http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/172182
-The Clearances sequence by Seamus Heaney – http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/247818

Do you have any idea how you want to approach the writing of this?

    Challenge…
-I would start by choosing the exact hot chocolate you are describing; choose the coffee shop, order the italian white hot chocolate or the yumchaa chili hot chocolate… make it something specific and with character. Then give yourself 10minutes (set a timer) to describe every detail of it….
-I would then use that as my first draft…
-I would then look at all the verbs & descriptive in that draft… put them in a thesaurus and see if there are other words that could relate to the hot chocolate and the grief or the mother… just to play around with there the movements of grief and hot chocolate meet. Hopefully this should help you realise where you need to expand and where you could cut.

Sound helpful? Give it a go and let me know what you think!

    Debris x
