Dancing, writing, performing, living

10 Jan

So I’m half watching the telly and the ‘Got to Dance’ auditions are on… cries of, “man, you’re on point,” “don’t make excuses,” “I’m 42!” “you made it your own!”
Then a French guy comes on, he’s 32, he dances ‘underground’. This, he tells us, is the last competition he’ll enter… he Freestyles… the music flows through his bones, through sinews, muscles, veins… effortless!
“It doesn’t come from ‘ere,” he taps his head, “it comes from ‘ere,” he thumps his heart.
When he dances, I stop what I’m doing, I stop worrying, about what’s cooking, about who’s done what homework, about money, about anything… I smile.
He transports me from here to somewhere better…
“It comes from ‘ere,” he thumps his heart. And I think: that is what good writing is. You learn the craft, you train, you refine, you read and listen to your peers, but unless you let it flow from your heart, it will never be true.
